It all depend what your objectives are - do you know the problem and are you trying to illustrate it? Are you evaluating for the root cause? Are you comparing all the different types of issues to see which ones you should tackle first? Or are you just throwing data together to see what it is telling you? This is a sample of report dashboard that was created to show work distribution, trends to 2 attribute in a given period, and distribution of metric in work productivity. Once you have the structure, updating the data source can automatically update the charts. There are other mechanism you can set up to automate the source as well, but it all depends on your data warehouse, database source connectivity, etc.
What you can apply in your daily life with Excel are formulas. There is no much thing as perfect data maintenance. If you're responsible for reporting and all you have is Microsoft Office, Excel is your best friend whom will do things that you don't look forward to doing.
Let me know if you have problems you're trying to tackle. Some of the board/network posts outside may address what you're look for, I am prepared to hear how you use Excel.
